CLJR Co-founders Jacob Monty and Peter Tarlow visit Israel, July 2024
Just returned from an impactful trip to Israel, my first since the October 7th attack. As a founding member of the Center for Latino-Jewish Relations, this visit was significant, and I’m grateful to have experienced it with Rabbi Peter Tarlow.
In Netiv Hahasara, a moshav/kibbutz 3 miles from the Gaza Strip, we honored the memory of 20 community members who were killed on October 7th.
Meeting with Raz Shmilovich again, a local resident, gave us a firsthand look at the challenges and resilience of those living near the Israel-Gaza border. Visiting Kibbutz Nir Oz, where Amos Horn’s brothers lived added a personal touch, recalling the event I recently hosted at my home for his brothers Eitan and Yair.
One of the most memorable moments was meeting with two lone soldier survivors, Shlomo Inu and Ely Inu. Hearing their story and witnessing their unwavering spirit was truly inspiring.
A great moment was grabbing some of the best authentic tacos this side of Houston at Tacos Luis. It was a taste of home and a reminder of the cultural connections we celebrate.
This trip reaffirmed the importance of our mission at the Center for Latino-Jewish Relations. I’m grateful for the experiences and the incredible people we met. – Jacob ‘Jake’ Monty
